The 1st radiotherapy machine arrived at UCHG this week . From January 2005 cancer patients will be able to recieve this lifesaving treatment in Galway.
The E1.5 million linear accelerator , the 1st of such 3 machines destined for the new E13m radiotherapy unit arrived on Wednesday April 7th . The others are due to arrive by the summer. It is hoped that the machines will be up and running by January 2005. Each machine can treat up to 45 patients daily , thats 120 patients a day and they will carry out 20,000 treatments a year altogether. It is an excellent addition to UCHG as previously cancer patients in need of radiotherapy had to travel to Dublin to recieve such treatments.
